Elyon Colombo Opens Despite Downturn

“If not now, when?”

The Elyon Colombo Hotel will open on 1 August 2019.

Based at Orion City, the 31-room property will target business travelers, with its convenient location at the business park and ease of access to the airport.

Speaking at the media launch, Presantha Jayamaha Co-Founder of Elyon Hotels, described the opening as a “dream come true.” The hotel will be managed by Elyon Hotels.

Jayamaha acknowledged that now may not be the best time to open a new hotel with the current situation for tourism in Sri Lanka, but told reporters, “If not now, when? As Sri Lankans, we must believe in this country, this industry and our future.”

Sri Lanka’s international tourism numbers have crashed following the Easter Sunday attacks with operators reporting cancellations as far forward as March 2020. Tourist arrival numbers have begun picking up since June, but industry figures expect it to be 12 months before a levels recover.

The Elyon Colombo is the chain’s second hotel in Sri Lanka. In 2017 they entered the hospitality sector with the management of the Best Western Elyon Colombo. Jayamaha describes the chain as a stand-alone lifestyle brand, which aims to create spaces for guests to rest, meet and think.

Nilantha Rupasinghe, General Manager of Elyon Colombo described the brand’s differentiator as a value-added business proposition. The hotel plans to target a location based strategy, focusing on clients of the nearby businesses, tech-savvy travelers and the MICE sector.

Despite the downturn currently being felt, Elyon Hotels remain optimistic about the future for tourism in Sri Lanka. The company is on the lookout for other locations to expand the brand into said Samantha Gunaratne, COO of Elyon Hotels. “Speed is not a concern for our expansion. Getting it right is crucial and properties below 100 rooms are ideal.”

The owners of the hotel, Orion City Group, welcomed the hotel as “a fantastic addition complementing our facilities. Business within the park will now have access to a range of innovative services available for recreation and relaxing”, said E. J. Gnanam, Managing Director, Orion City Group.

Orion Towers is owned by St Anthony’s Group, whose flagship Orion City IT Park was launched in 2007.
