January Tourist Arrivals up 2.2%

SLTDA data shows that 244,239 tourists arrived in January 2019 compared to 238,924 in 2018, an increase in arrvial numbers by 2.2 percent.

2019 is off to a steady start with tourist arrival numbers up 2.2 percent from a year earlier, data from SLTDA shows. In January 2019, 244,239 tourists arrived, compared to 238,924 in 2018. The top three source markets remain India, China, and the UK.

India arrivals amounted to 16 percent of the total at 38,000, an increase of 5.6 percent on figures from January last year. Tourists from China, the second-largest market increased 8.8% YoY to 24,000, and the UK increased 13.5 percent on the same month last year to 23,000 tourists.

Regionally, Europe dominates at the largest source market with 50% of the arrivals. The European winter makes January an attractive time to visit tropical climates.

Within the top ten source markets, visitor numbers from Germany, France, and the Ukraine decreased, while Italy saw a significant increase of 20 percent compared to Jan 2018 levels.

At the end of 2018, tourist arrivals were up 10.3 percent YoY to 2.3 million.
