Japan: Record 30 Million Arrivals in 2018

Japan’s visitor numbers have increased 132% since 2014.

Japan’s visitor arrival numbers from 2018 reached a record 31.2 million, according to preliminary data from the Japan National Tourism Organization. This is an 8.7% increase over 2017, which saw 28.7 million visitors.

Growth in visitor arrivals over the last four years (2014-2018) has been impressive. 2014 saw 13.4 million visitors, which more than doubled by 2017. Over the four year period, visitor arrivals to Japan increased by a huge 132%.

In 2018, the top 5 source markets for Japan were: China (8.4 million), South Korea (7.5 million), Taiwan (4.8 million), Hong Kong (2.2 million), and USA (1.5 million).
