IHG digs deep with the opening of 200th hotel

The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland opened on 15 November. Developed by Shimao Group, the property stretches 88 meters underground and was nominated as one of the architectural wonders of the world due to its pioneering design.

Built into the side wall of a formerly abandoned quarry in southwestern Shanghai, the hotel is mostly subterranean with two floors above ground and 16 below, including 2 floors underwater.

Founded in 1946 by aviation pioneer Juan Trippe, this opening marks the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts brand’s 200th hotel worldwide.
