Lonely Planet named Sri Lanka the number one country to visit in 2019 in its annual Best in Travel guide.
Described on their website as “a country revived”, Lonely Planet celebrates Sri Lanka’s mix of religions and cultures, the growing surf scene, and increased accessibility to the north and east.
Best in Travel lists the top 10 countries, cities and regions alongside other travel experiences for the year ahead, ranked by the staff of Lonely Planet, including editors and contributors from around the world. The top destinations are prominently featured on the website’s home page and the respected travel guide’s best-selling book, which is now in its 14th year.
Germany is rated second in the country list and Zimbabwe third. The number one city is Denmark’s “capital of cool” Copenhagen. The number one region is the Piedmont area of Italy, home to Leonardo Da Vinci and a new UNESCO heritage site.
